Yesterday in Bombay...Today in New York
This morning started off the same...woke up, showered, walked to the PATH station, and picked up my AM New York where I promptly went directly to the World News Section. There's where I was saddened.
Waiting for me was an article about the eight bombings in Bombay last night, during communter traffic. Eight bombs, eight different places, almost silmoutaneously. Horrible, completely horrible. Sadness crept over me as I read on. But it wasn't just the article that was making me so sad.
Yesterday, I had done my usual morning routine on my way to work, which included stopping for coffee from the indian guy a block from work. Yesterday was the day that he told me he was from Bombay. Coincidence? Probably...
Yesterday in Bombay, the people he grew up with, knows, loves, got hurt. Today in New York, him and his family were safe but saddened. Yesterday I learned a little bit about the beauty of Bombay. Today I saw the sadness in New York.
The thing about today, though, is that I am glad I know he is from Bombay. I am saddened by the events that happened yesterday...the events that could now happen anywhere in the world...but I am also glad that I am able to say "I am sorry for your loss" and mean it. I am glad I know why he is sad today...it just makes it even more real, intense, living in NYC...
